If you'd like to learn more about nonprofit organizations in Sacramento look at these resources:

  • Health & Human Service Nonprofits - The Community Services Planning Council publishes the Community Services Directory which includes all of the health and human service nonprofits in the Sacramento area. We have a copy at the Nonprofit Resource Center that visitors can peruse, or you can purchase a copy directly from the Community Services Planning Council.  See www.communitycouncil.org for details. You can also search for local services at http://sacramento.thebeehive.org.

  • Arts Nonprofits - Visit the Sacramento Metropolitain Arts Commission (SMAC) at www.sacmetroarts.org

  • Environmental Nonprofits - If you're interested in environmental nonprofits, start with the Environmental Council of Sacramento: http://www.ecosacramento.net

Want to learn about nonprofits outside Sacramento? Several counties publish a directory like the Community Serivces Directory noted above; call InfoLine 916.498.1000 to ask about similar services in neighboring counties. You can also create a list of nonprofits in a particular area at www.guidestar.org or www.justgive.org

Networking Opportunities - One of the best ways to begin a career is to network. The Nonprofit Resource Center offers classes and conferences where you can network, learn skills needed in nonprofits as well as learn the language and culture of local nonprofits. Check our training schedule for current classes. You can also visit the Networking Opportunities section of our website to locate other regularly scheduled networking events for nonprofit staff.

Volunteer Experience - If you're new to the nonprofit field, the best thing you can do is get volunteer experience. Fundraising or board experience, especially, will be smiled upon on the resume and in the interview. You can use a volunteer opportunity to try out an area where you can learn new skills. Check out our Board Leadership workshops to learn how to be a board member. Identify available board positions through our BoardLink page. For any level of volunteering, interview several nonprofits to see where your skills and interests match. Through successful volunteering you will soon build a reputation in the nonprofit community and increase your opportunities to hear about jobs. (As in any industry, most jobs are never advertised.)

Sacramento Area Salaries - We have a recent copy of a wage & benefits survey for Northern CA nonprofits available at our office. This is good to study before you interview and begin salary negotiations. You may review it during our regular office hours.

Books - We house more than 1,500 books covering every aspect of managing a nonprofit, as well as a small selection of "nonprofit career" books. You can access these materials any time during our regular office hours. Members of the Nonprofit Resource Center can check them out.

Sacramento Professional Network - If you are currently unemployed, you may want to check out the Sacramento Professional Network, sponsored by California's Employment Development Dept (EDD). It' s free and provides you job search training, networking and positive motivation while you continue your search. Visit www.sacpronet.com
